Cranberry Township is known as one of the fastest growing and
progressive communities in Pennsylvania. The rapid influx of
residents and commercial establishments into the community
over the past decade resulted in a continual increase in waste
generation and a dramatic change in its composition. Greater
pressure to comply with state and county laws along with poor
participation and recycling rates the Township determined it was
time for a an overhaul of its system.

Single stream recycling is a new concept in many areas of the
United States. Proponents point to its convenience and cost saving
capabilities. Detractors voice concerns over contamination of
recyclable material, especially when combined with a volume based
disposal system. To determine the how well this newly
implemented system was working, Cranberry Township conducted a
physical sort of single stream recycling material from its automated
routes. The sort served a threefold purpose. First, it provided the
Township with accurate documentation of the composition, by weight
and volume, of materials actually collected from its residential
households. Second, it offered a clear picture of the sources and
degree of residual contamination in the Township’s recycling stream.

to offer a scope of services to address many avenues of
